Title of the Talk: Beyond the Green Checkmark: Why Human Judgment Still Defines Software Quality
Abstract :
Modern software teams rely heavily on automation to validate applications at speed and scale. With the growing use of artificial intelligence, testing is advancing even further, from generating test scenarios and executing workflows to analyzing failures and identifying potential risks. These capabilities are transforming how quickly teams can evaluate software. But a fundamental question remains: does a passing test necessarily mean we tested the right thing?
Automated systems are highly effective at validating defined conditions, but software quality extends beyond successful execution. Business context, changing user behavior, unexpected interactions, ambiguous requirements and risks that were never translated into test scenarios can remain outside the boundaries of automated validation.
This talk explores the evolving relationship between automation, AI and human judgment in software quality engineering. It examines where automated validation provides strong confidence, where blind spots can emerge and why human testers remain important in questioning assumptions, identifying missing scenarios and evaluating whether testing reflects real business risk.
Rather than positioning humans and AI as competing approaches, the session presents a collaborative model for the future of quality engineering: machines provide scale, speed and continuous validation while humans provide context, critical thinking and judgment. As testing becomes increasingly intelligent, the role of the quality professional may shift from simply executing tests to asking a more important question: are we testing what truly matters?
